‘Umbrellies’

Single Red Umbrella – Shanghai, originally uploaded by dragonroy.

There is yet another thing that fascinates me on rainy days: umbrellas (or ‘umbrellies’ as many Melbournians call them fondly).

I think it is a pretty sight to behold with office goers in rain-washed streets with umbrellas of many different colours; bright and colourful- in contrast to the dark clouds in the sky. It is beautiful, perhaps only in my own meagre standards, but even then…

It is rather strange as I myself am not too fond of carrying an umbrella- and yet, when others do it, collectively, I find it eye-catching enough to dedicate a day’s words on. Strange, yes- but in a good way. This is, after all, a happy post.

Another thing to note: this is another difference between Melbourne and Dhaka. Dhaka has mostly black umbrellas- Melbourne umbrellas are of all the colours of the rainbow, and more. There are some Bengali songs about ‘black umbrellas’ as I remember, and my eyes were so used to a lifetime of seeing black umbrellas that it still needs some getting used to when I see colours everywhere in rain- again- in a GOOD way :)

Haha, really? I can’t imagine Dhaka with colourful umbrellas! I remember the Gulistan road during rain- black umbrella everywhere, even the hawkers sat under black umbrellas- those big ones.

I use one now- a dark blue one- if it rains while going to work- but never on the way back. I never used to use one while in Dhaka though :) .
